Repurposing OLV church into theatre
Client
Municipality of Helmond
Hall
Large Hall
Architect
Cepezed, Delft
Floor Area

Project Description
Theater het Speelhuis. Important preconditions apply to the new theatre facility. Because the church is a national monument, remains the property of the Diocese of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and the facility is temporary, interventions must affect the building as little as possible and must all be reversible. In addition, the theatre must be operational in an extremely short period of time. On the Kromme Steenweg, new construction for the theater has been erected, from which the halls in the former church can be accessed. The exterior of the church, designed by Jos Margry, is in its original state.
Hall
Large hall 430 seats
Our advice
- Carrying out consultancy work for the theatre auditorium, multifunctional spaces and foyer in the field of building physics, building acoustics, (variable) room acoustics, sound radiation and installation concept.
- Prepare in design team (project manager, architect, structural engineer and building systems consultant) the Program of Requirements, Sketch Design to Technical Design.
- Reviewing architectural and installation design for building physics and acoustics.
- Providing procurement supervision and execution supervision during construction.
Result
Realised in 2013 as a temporary theatre, but due to its very high quality, it has since been decided by the municipality to keep it as a permanent theatre and in this context PBTA has been awarded a follow-up contract for the final design, preparation of work specifications, tendering and implementation supervision of the various acoustics and theatre technology lots.
