Project Description

Luxor Live, the pop venue in Arnhem.
The renovation of pop venue Luxor Live had to take into account the building’s monument status. This included the pop venue’s monumental ceiling.

Luxor was not originally designed as a live music pop venue, and certainly not at the noise levels that it produces today. In addition, there is housing right next to the building and in the future there will be housing behind it. To prevent disturbance to surrounding residences, the sound insulation of the pop venue had to be greatly improved. The principle solution chosen was a box-in-a-box construction in which the existing hall, with its monumental ceiling, forms the inner box. Around this, a second box construction was realized, partly based on the existing construction and partly based on new constructions (roof). The outer box was kept free from the inner box as much as possible. In this way, the monumental character of the hall’s ceiling could be preserved.

To achieve good acoustics in the pop hall, some degree of sound absorption also had to be introduced. The ceiling was not an option. In consultation with the architect, the solution was found in the wall and furnishing elements at the back of the hall.
