Project Description
Commissioned by the Municipality of Westland, PBTA advised and created the acoustic room design for repurposing the former flower auction hall in Poeldijk into a cultural centre and event venue.
Our advice
The large auction hall lent itself perfectly to adaptation into a multipurpose hall suitable for multiple uses. Halls such as this have a large architectural volume, which allows acoustics to be realized that are adaptable to the requirements of different uses: variable acoustics. From low reverberation for good intelligibility and amplified sound (theatre acoustics) to longer reverberation for a full and spacious sound for unamplified music, such as harmony and choir.
This was realized with acoustic ceiling islands and wall coverings with easily retractable curtains. Control measurements when it was finished confirm that the intended acoustic variation between theatre and music was actually achieved.
The advice took into account as much as possible the limitation of noise emission to the surrounding area in order to prevent nuisance for local residents.
Result
Immediately after commissioning (2018), the great satisfaction of visitors and artists with the result achieved was evident.
“Event location De Veiling Poeldijk is regularly praised for its good acoustics. During the opening concert, which included a sizeable orchestra, the conductor on duty compared the acoustics to that of a concert hall!”
