Project Description

The Cultural Centre Amstelveen was opened on January 3, 1975. The architect was Rutger Dirk Bleeker (1920-2016).
In 1999 the name of the building changed to Schouwburg Amstelveen and in the years 2000-2001 the complex was extended at the front with a so-called “culture strip” designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects B.V. of Amsterdam. A flat-floor auditorium was added to the building as the Small Hall with flexible seating arrangements. The Large Hall was extensively remodeled according to PBTA’s design to meet the demands of the time. As was common in the 1970s, the seating plan was designed for the possibility of also playing théâtre-en-round, i.e. the stage in the hall surrounded by the audience. Little use was made of this, partly because of the labor-intensive conversion. With list stage, the disadvantage was that the viewing direction for the audience was not oriented toward the fixed stage. In this renovation, the hall was completely stripped inside and the walls and ceiling were built according to a new design. The concrete auditorium floor removed and replaced with a new floor with curved rows of seats facing the stage. And with more legroom and seating comfort. The balcony has been rearranged.

For the Large Hall, PBTA B.V. was responsible for the entire design: new floor with air intake under the seats, acoustically designed walls and an undulating ceiling with built-in low-energy fiber optic lighting, light bridge, etc. The interior was designed by Nel Verschuuren (1943-2016) from Amsterdam, partner and successor of Kho Liang Ie (1927-1975), including the special carpeting and the design of the theater seats as well as other (foyer) furniture. For the new Small Hall, PBTA designed the retractable grandstand, lighting bridges, etc.
